A Day in the Life of a Lobbyist

March 26, 2018 Gillian Smart
IMG_4485.jpg

Never in a million years did I imagine lobbyist or political activist would be on my resume. When I learned about Beautycounter a little over two years ago, I made the decision to join based on the mission of the company.  I vividly remember reading about the lack of regulation in the personal care product industry and was baffled by it.  I started scanning products in my bathroom that I thought were safe and was shocked to see the results.  I was a victim of green washing.  I was fooled by the terms all natural, dermatologist and pediatrician recommended, and even organic.  How are companies allowed to stamp these terms on their labels if the products contain ingredients such as formaldehyde, parabens, fragrance, PEGs, etc. I consider myself a pretty health concious person and felt compelled to share this information with my friends and family.

Here I am, two years later, returning from my second trip to Washington, D.C. to advocate for more heath protective laws in our country. This go round, I felt a bit more seasoned.  The first time I attended this trip I was relatively new to Beautycounter and had no idea what to expect.  I didn't really know anyone, but met some of the most incredible women who have become some of my most cherished friends. I can’t begin to explain how incredible it is to be apart of a company that puts such a strong emphasis on advocacy and bringing women together to empower each other.  I have learned so much about the corruption of the beauty industry as well as the political side.  It still boggles my mind that there has not been a major federal law passed in the personal care product industry since 1938.  A lot has happened since that time, including the introduction of over 80,000 chemicals into commerce with less than 10% being tested for links to human health issues. Unfortunately, we are the guinea pigs, our children are the guinea pigs, and there children will be unless we can move our mission forward.

On March 4th, 2018, in honor of Beautycounter’s 5th birthday, 100 consultants (2 per state) were invited to Washington, D.C. to meet with senators and members of congress on the need for more health protective laws.  After a day filled with training, we spent Monday on Capitol Hill attending over 100 meetings with representatives from all 50 states.  We were there to ask the senate to co-sponser the Personal Care Products Safety Act (PCPSA, S.1113) introduced by Senator Feinstein from California and Senator Collins from Maine.  We were also there to discuss the safety standard and lack of funding to move this bill forward. This legislation will protect consumers from unsafe ingredients in personal care products.  This bill will allow the FDA to assess cosmetics ingredients for safety, regulate cosmetics that are unsafe and have the ability to recall products. Finally, this bill would require companies to label ALL ingredients on the product. On the house side we want them to introduce legislation that will protect consumers from unsafe ingredients in personal care products.   It is difficult to comprehend that under current legislation, consumers are not given the information needed to make informed decisions. We do the best we can with the information we have,  but unfortunately it is not enough.

Senators were surprised to hear that a company like Beautycounter is able to successfully showcase that reform is good for our health AND business.  Beautycounter is pro-commerce and pro-regulation.

The highlight of my trip was chatting with Senator Bernie Senators about the work Beautycounter is doing and why we need his support.  The moment was as bit surreal as most of our meetings on the hill took place with staffers.  As we were standing outside of Senator Sanders' office waiting for our meeting to take place, I looked up and there is Senator Sanders himself walking down the hall wheeling his suitcase as he just arrived from Burlington, Vermont.  I didn't even think but instead just shouted his name and wanted to introduce myself.  He asked why we were here and was genuinely interested in listening.  This is a bipartisan issue that effects every single person in our country.

There are many ways to get involved and support our mission. I am asking that you please take about 5 minutes today to text betterbeauty to 52886.  You will receive a text message back with a link to directly email your local members of congress.  The email is already generated for you, please just fill in required information and SEND.  The common theme during all 8 meetings was that senators need to hear directly from YOU and that you care about this issue.

On the morning of our meetings 100 women with a bold red lip made a statement. We were there to make our voices heard and tell our stories. Stories of cancer, lack of education and options in many communities, infertility, children with severe allergies, the list goes on. This is not a women issue or about makeup, this is about every single person in our country deserving access to safer products.  We have all been directly or indirectly affected by this issue and something needs to change!

Did you know that nail polish can be one of the most toxic beauty products we put on our bodies?  Having two daughters has really opened my eyes! My 3 year old came home from school a few months ago asking to have her nails painted.  My first thought was "ugh! all of those toxic chemicals!" But of course I didn't want her to miss out on the fun of nail polish!  I did some research and with a few great recommendations from friends I have found my favorite polishes to be Priti NYC and Ella and Mila.  I also really love the Priti NYC soy based nail polish remover.  It doesn't have the toxic odor that many other nail polish removers contain.

Both Priti NYC and Ella and Mila lasted about a week on fingernails and 3-4 weeks on toes which I found similar to other nail polishes I have used in the past.  I used the base and top coat from Priti NYC.  There are so many great color choices with both lines.  A few of our favorites are Priti NYC Park Princess Dahlia and Ginger Snap Orchid.  I also love the Ella and Mila mommy and me sets, they are the perfect combinations.  Our favorite set is Rosy Cheeks and My Pool Party.  Ella also loves sparkles, her favorite is Party in a Bottle.

Here a list of chemicals you should avoid (from Ellamila.com) in traditional nail polishes and why:

  • Toluene is a liquid that is used as a solvent and has the familiar smell of paint thinner.  You can be exposed to toluene by breathing it in or getting it on your skin, causing skin irritation.  Unfortunately, inhaling high levels of toluene is said to be harmful to your nervous system and can cause light-headedness and nausea.  Toluene is a toxin that may also cause birth defects and developmental problems in children of pregnant women who have had extended exposure.

Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) is a commonly used plasticizer and has been linked to cancer.  DBP has also been connected to birth defects in studies involving lab animals.  In fact, this toxin was added to the California Proposition 65 list of suspected teratogens, which are agents that cause malformations of an embryo.

Formaldehyde is a commonly used chemical to preserve and embalm dead animals (and humans).  Its vapors are also irritating and can trigger asthma.  Formaldehyde is also a known human carcinogen, a factor directly involved in causing cancer.

Formaldehyde Resin is a derivative of Formaldehyde, mainly used in the production of coatings and adhesives.  It is not as toxic as Formaldehyde but can be an allergen.

Camphor is a poison that can cause seizures and disorientation if used in large doses.  This chemical acts as a cover on your nails, depriving them of nutrients and causing yellow staining on your nails.

HAPPY POLISHING!

I absolutely love summer!  My 3 year old, Ella and I are always making lists of things we love to do once the weather warms up.  Living in Vermont, we spend as much time as possible outdoors soaking up the sun!  Spending time outside means bug bites and summer skin.  You know that feeling after a day spent outside in the sun where you skin feels hot and itchy no matter how many times you applied sunscreen? Well, I do!  And nothing has soothed our skin more than Beautycounter's Enrich Body Butter.  It is truly amazing!  I have been using our Hydrate Body Lotion for months and absolutely love it which is why I was hesitant to make the switch.  However, after one use of our body butter I am convinced.   Beautycounter's Enrich Body Butter contains shea butter and mongongo oil to quench and nourish your skin, while organic sunflower oil, aloe and chamomile soothe and smooth.   The body butter is rich and creamy but absorbs so quickly and effortlessly.  I have tried many body butters in the past that have felt greasy, but not this one!  Literally absorbs within seconds.  And the best part is I can use it on our entire family.

Why Beautycounter

About 6 months ago I joined an amazing company called Beautycounter.  I first learned about Beautycounter through an old friend of my husbands who I didn't really know.  As I read through her email I became interested in the company mainly because the founder was a graduate of UVM.  Us alumni have to support one another!  I learned about the mission of the company, did some research on my own, and tried the products.  I was impressed!  Not only are the products amazing but Beautycounter is directly working to try and get regulations changed in the personal care product industry.   The United States has not passed a major federal law to regulate the safety of ingredients used in personal care products since 1938.  The European Union bans or restricts over 1300 chemicals from their personal care products, the United States, only 11!!! These two facts completely boggled my mind.  How is it possible that our government has such little regulation on products we all use every single day?  This is a human health issue and we as Americans deserve better.

I have been aware for a long time about the importance of what we put in our bodies.  I remember about ten years ago watching the documentary Food Inc with my dad and it completely changed the way I eat.  However,  I was naive to what I was putting on my body. I thought that I was choosing safe products and was fooled by the terms "organic" and "all natural" that I was reading on labels.  Companies are able to put those false labels on their products because of the lack of regulations. Companies are also able to use terms like "fragrance" on their labels which is actually a trade secret, meaning those companies don't have to disclose what ingredients are hidden behind that label.  Scary stuff, right?  Take a moment to download the Environmental Working Group's app called Healthy Living.   This app ranks your personal care products (and food) on a scale from 1-10 with 1 being the least toxic.  It is a great place to start when thinking about cleaning up your lifestyle.

I chose to work for Beautycounter for many reasons.  The final reason was because of my daughters.  I want them to grow up in a safer America.  I don't want them to have to spend time reading labels and innocently being exposed to harmful chemicals.  Teenage girls are the most at risk when it comes to levels of chemical exposure.  Did you know that only about 10% of the 10,000 chemicals found in personal care products have safety data?  And even crazier is the Food and Drug Administration allows companies to use chemicals known to be extremely harmful (lead, formaldehyde, and phthalates) in the products we use everyday.  Listen, I get that it is impossible to live a totally clean lifestyle and you can drive yourself crazy trying.  But I do believe that there are many things we can control such as the food we eat and what we put on our bodies.  And with that said, I will do my best to use the information I have to make healthier choices for myself and my family.

Joining Beautycounter has allowed me to be apart of the change that is going to happen.  I had the opportunity to join 100 other consultants as well as Beautycounter's leaders in Washington, D.C. to meet with senators from all 50 states and have our voices heard.  It was an experience that will be with me forever and I can say that I helped change regulations to better the health of ALL Americans.

Here are some amazing facts about Beautycounter:

*Beautycounter has banned over 1500 ingredients from our products, setting a new healthy and safety standard.

*We are a B Corporation. B Corps are for profit companies certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

*Beautycounter partners directly with the Environmental Working Group, the Breast Cancer Fund and Healthy Child, Healthy World.

*Our mission is to get safe products into the hands of everyone.  We are doing this by trying to help change regulations in the United States.

*We are a direct retail brand.  This means we sell our products through a variety of avenues.  We have consultants that help educate and inform as well as help personalize your shopping experience.  You can also shop directly through Beautycounter's e-commerece website.  And finally we have strategic partnerships with brands like Goop, J-Crew and Target.  Our limited Target partnership will launch in September and last 3 months or until supplies last.  Beautycounter has created a smaller, exclusive line for Target that will allow many more Americans to access our beautiful and safe products.

I love educating others on our mission.  Please don't hesitate to reach out to learn about the many ways you can get involved in Beautycounter.
